One of the few weaknesses of the D13/D16 engine architecture is the injector copper sleeve (cup). Over time, the seal degrades, allowing coolant to mix with fuel or combustion gases to pressurize the cooling system.

3. Precision Power: Delphi & Bosch Unit Injectors
The Volvo TAD1351VE engine achieves its remarkable efficiency through the use of Electronic Unit Injectors (EUI). Unlike older common rail systems, each EUI generates its own high pressure (up to 2,400 bar) directly at the cylinder head.
However, this precision comes at a cost. The #1 cause of “Low Power” or “Black Smoke” in port machinery is injector nozzle wear. Using poor quality diesel erodes the needle seating.
Every Volvo E3 injector has a unique calibration code (Trim Code) laser-etched on the body. If you install a new injector without programming this code into the EMS 2.2 ECU, the engine will run rough.
